Why Seahorse?

The seahorse is especially important in neuropsychology!

The Hippocampus is a very important brain region, especially involved in memory, and the word hippocampus is the Greek word for seahorse, because when you look at this brain region it closely resembles the shape of a seahorse!

The seahorse is also an iconic symbol in the region of the North East of England as it represents the strong links between the region and its maritime history.

It is also important to me as an individual, because my favourite thing to do when I am not working is to swim in the sea (the photographs on this site were taken during many sunrise trips to the North East's beautiful coastline)!  I also used to keep horses and the word beautifully combines these two past times as well as my interest in neuropsychology!!!

Specialist Prematurity Service

Children & young people born pre-term are at increased risk of developing problems including:

  • Motor functioning issues and learning difficulties or challenges around educational attainment

  • Issues with communication & language

  • Executive functioning issues

  • Traits associated with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Due to the increased risk of developmental delay, which could have an impact on health & wellbeing, if a child is born at 28 weeks or earlier the current NICE guidelines recommend increased monitoring and support.  This SHOULD include a face to face cognitive assessment at 4 years of age to enable teams to identify any potential issues and enable support packages to be put into place, particularly in an education setting.

We are in a position to provide such assessments from 4 years onwards should you wish to arrange an assessment privately.
